Would the most autobiographical of Pedro Almodovar’s films also be the best? With an AlloCiné press rating flirting with perfection (4.6/5), Pain and Glory convincing on all counts. The sincerity that emanates from the whole commands respect, the filmmaker agreeing to reveal himself fully in his faults, his cowardice and his courage.
A respect that is tinged with admiration, so much the care given to each detail elevates Almodovar to the rank of a Visconti. For the record, the objects and furniture that make up the hero’s apartment come largely from the director’s own apartment. The whole, magnified by a neat photo, is a feast for the eyes.
Inspired staging, subtle mise en abyme (with an extraordinary Antonio Banderas as a megalomaniac and sickly alter-ego, winner of an interpretation prize at Cannes for the role), labyrinthine scenario… this film joins the ranks of the leaders -work. Ideal for starting (or concluding) your exploration of Almodovar’s cinema.
