For the past few days, viral videos related to the high-profile trial of Johnny Depp and Amber Heard have emerged on Tik Tok. The users of the social network are indeed making fun of certain words of the actress, which has raised a wave of indignation.
Parodies that go wrong. Since the start of the trial between Amber Heard to her ex-husband Johnny Depp, many « memes » (images or videos that aim to make people laugh) are published every day on social networks. And for a few days, a sentence pronounced by Amber Heard during her speech, during which she describes a scene where her ex-companion would have slapped her, has been hijacked by Internet users on TikTok. « I was coming out of the bedroom. Johnny slapped me in the face. I turned to look at him and said: ‘Johnny, you hit me. You just hit me' »she said in court in Fairfax.
In the parody videos, the users of the platform take over the audio track of this testimony and literally replay the scene described by the actress to make fun of the inconsistencies of these remarks. Most of the time, we see two people, one hitting the other, before the latter turns around and utters Amber Heard’s sentence in a vacuum. The original footage was shared by a Johnny Depp fan who captioned: « You don’t have to look someone in the face to be able to slap them? ». A video viewed more than 11 million times on TikTok.
Videos that de-dramatize domestic violence
But on Twitter, these parodies have angered many Internet users. Some assure that they participate in « the silence of victims of domestic violence » because they play down Amber Heard’s speech in order to make it something light and fun. Accused of condoning these jokes around domestic violence, TikTok quickly decided to delete several of these videos, telling the creators that their content violated the company’s anti-bullying policies. It is indeed stipulated in the regulations of the social network that it is forbidden to create videos « who denigrate the victims of violent tragedies ».
