“A phone call changed everything”: embarrassed, Claude Lelouch recounts the last moments of Patrick Dewaere

Invited to the 8:30 p.m. set on Sunday, Claude Lelouch returned to one of the dramas of his life: the death of Patrick Dewaere, who a few hours before his suicide, was by his side.

He was the guest of Thomas Sotto in 8:30 p.m. Sundaythis May 11, 2022. Claude Lelouch spoke about the film turn to live, in theaters this Wednesday, May 11, directed by Philippe Azoulay. The opportunity for the journalist from France 2 to look back on his great career but also on his way of seeing life, he who was affected by a real tragedy : “You spent your life saying you had doubts,” then launches the acolyte of Julia Vignali. « In life, there is what we say and what we think. And the great actors are those who at some point manage to achieve this synchronicity between what they say and what they think. . Spontaneity is the thing I like the most in cinema. The truth nobody has it, but spontaneity is halfway between lies and truth. » then retorts the director.

And it is not for nothing if Claude Lelouch evokes his vision of the truth like this. « At the same time, you experienced a traumatic episode. It was a friend of yours, it was Patrick Dewaere, the last lunch with him. It’s July 82, you have lunch with him… », evokes Thomas Sotto. A painful memory for the filmmaker: « Yes, we had lunch together, we were preparing the life of Marcel Cerdan and Edith Piaf. He was happy, overjoyed, overjoyed. In the morning we had taken pictures in the Bois de Boulogne. And then there has a phone call during lunch that changed everything », he begins by describing.

Claude Lelouch: « I didn’t know he was going to end his life »

And for good reason, Claude Lelouch remembers perfectly the last time he saw Patrick Dewaere : « At one point, he came to me and he said to me: ‘Listen, I have a little emergency’. I didn’t know he was going to end his life. And impossible to predict, he came like that, during lunch. And he said to me in addition: ‘I’ll give you an appointment at five o’clock later at the boxing gym.’ We were to do the Cerdan world championship against Tony Zale. He had rehearsed, he was ready. And then an hour later, I was called to tell me that he had put an end to his life », he said with emotion. Thomas Sotto then asks him the question that all viewers have in mind: « Did you ever find out who called that day? ». To which Claude Lelouch responds: « We have doubts. But doubts I cannot put on this table ».
