After How I Met Your Father, 5 series that are (really) worth watching

The How I Met Your Mother spin-off isn’t quite a hit. Here are some series of the genre to see absolutely.

How I Met Your Mother still sits proudly among the most popular sitcoms. Even eight years after the adventures of Ted, Lily, Marshall, Robin and Barney concluded, Carter Bays and Craig Thomas’ series still holds a special place in the hearts of ensemble comedy fans. So it was only a matter of time before other channels took over the project to adapt it. After a first abortive spin-off, with the creators of the series at the helm, the universe is finally returning to our screens.

At 30, Sophie knows that finding love in New York is a challenge, especially at a time when romance is experienced through a screen and a Tinder profile. As she begins to despair, she crosses paths with a taxi driver and his best friend, the owner of a bar. When the latter asks for his girlfriend’s hand, Sophie regains hope that one day she too will be able to meet the rare pearl. She may not be far away.

Despite a rather convincing cast, and a format that we love to find, we have to admit that Hulu’s incursion does not compare with its elder. So if, like us, you were a little disappointed by its first episodes, here are some series that should reconcile you to ensemble comedies.

Lovesick on Netflix

There are some calls you’d rather never have to make. Dylan must nevertheless be violent. He is suffering from an infectious disease that is transmitted sexually and goes to find all his exes to tell them the bad news.

Each episode explores one of Dylan’s past relationships, with frequent back and forth between past and present. A form of narration that captures our attention from the very first moment, as we fall in love with this group of friends. A nugget of British humor to consume without moderation.

New Girl on Disney+

Well, this one we don’t present anymore. But for the bottom two who haven’t crossed paths with Jess, Nick, Schmidt, Winston and Cece yet, here’s what you need to know. After a painful breakup, Jess must find an apartment. She then decides to join a roommate populated by boys who are a little intrusive, but very endearing. The cohabitation holds many surprises.

New Girl is a must-have sitcom for those who like stories of crazy friendships and incredible situations. A succession of gags of the most beautiful effect, which will at least have the merit of giving us a smile on the days of depression.

Kevin Can F*** Himself on Amazon Prime Video

If she plays on all the sitcom codes, Kevin can f*ck himself above all succeeds in breaking them, by opting for a mix of genres that works. A bias which is also reminiscent of that of the first episodes of Wanda vision on Disney+.

Throughout its first season, the narrative alternates between the classic shots iconic to 1990s series, and a darker treatment when Allison’s character finds herself alone with her demons. The rendering is not always perfect, but the exercise has the merit of being original in an increasingly calibrated market.

The It Crowd on Netflix

Broadcast between 2003 and 2013, The IT Crowd is the quintessential British sitcom. We find pell-mell the fixed shots, the unbearable laughter recorded, as well as a succession of incredible situations bringing with it their share of misunderstandings and incomprehension. Add to that an absurd humor full of geek references, and the adventures of Jen, Roy and Maurice stand out as a delightfully retro comforter series, which makes fun of nerds as much as noobs.

Funny on Netflix

It’s not just in the United States that comedies are effective. In France, too, there are some successes of the genre, starting with Ten percent which attracted many spectators all over the world. So inevitably, when Fanny Herrero returns to writing a series, we watch this production carefully.

In a Parisian Comedy Club, budding comedians try to make their mark in this ultra-competitive environment. Between their careers and their not always very understanding entourage, life at the Funny is not always… funny.

As funny as it is tender, the new Netflix series is carried by a very talented cast which oscillates between a humorist score and more dramatic scenes. An exercise that is far from obvious, but that everyone can take up hands down.

And if you are one of the few people who have never watched a single episode ofHow I Met Your Mother, we can only advise you to start watching the first season directly. It is available on Disney +, as well as the entire series.
