Simon Yates (BikeExchange) won the second stage of the Giro this Saturday, a 9.2 km individual time trial in the streets of Budapest (Hungary). He beat leader Mathieu Van der Poel (Alpecin-Fenix) by three seconds, who retains the pink jersey. Author of a good time, Romain Bardet more than limited the breakage.
Yates, a flying Briton
Although claiming a good place in this individual time trial, Simon Yates was not cited by the big favorites for the stage victory. But he amazed and subdued the competition in Budapest. The Briton was already in the lead in the intermediate after 7.9 very flat kilometers, at the foot of the final bump (1500 meters). One second ahead of Mathieu Van der Poel.
And he resisted the supersonic ascent of the Dutchman, who, standing on the pedals and carried by the crowd, finally stumbled three seconds behind the leader of the Bike-Exchange. The latter dispossessed another Dutchman of the best provisional time, Tom Dumoulin (Jumbo Visma), finally third at five seconds. This is the 5th victory on the Giro for Simon Yates, after his three successes in 2018 (Gran Sasso, Osimo, Sappada) and that of last year (Alpe Di Mera).

The beautiful chrono of Bardet
On the tricolor side, it was Pavel Sivakov (Ineos-Grenadiers) who achieved the best time by finishing 15th (12’12 »). The good surprise came from Romain Romain Bardet, 17th (12’14 »), not necessarily in his favorite exercise which more than limited breakage. He conceded six seconds to Joao Almeida, two to Richie Porte but above all took time from certain competitors like Richard Carapaz, the defending champion, whom he beat by four seconds. Mathieu Van der Poel retains the pink jersey, 11 seconds ahead of Yates and 16 seconds over Dumoulin.
