As soon as they were released, the fingerprint sensors of the Google Pixel 6 and 6 Pro were widely criticized. The Mountain View company intends to correct the situation for the Pixel 6a.

A problematic sensor
Some customers, for example, had to try several times to unlock their device, while others reported that it no longer worked at all when the smartphone was turned on again, if its battery had been completely discharged. Of course, this did not affect all Pixel 6 owners, but obviously enough to give the creator of Android bad publicity. It must be said that this innocuous action is carried out a large number of times during the day and that a malfunction can quickly become irritating.
Google has therefore deployed several updates so that things are more or less in order. But even today, the sensor in the Pixel 6 range is far from the most efficient. The Californian giant remains hesitant when it comes to explaining the problem. During the launch, the firm announced that « additional security algorithms » lengthened the recognition process.
We’re sorry for the hassle. The Pixel 6 fingerprint sensor utilizes enhanced security algorithms. In some instances, these added protections can take longer to verify or require more direct contact with the sensor. Try troubleshooting steps: https://t.co/uTbifE5Uyo. Thanks. ^Levi

A change of course
Google does not intend to repeat the error with its next Pixel 6a. The smartphone, unveiled at the recent inaugural conference of its I/O, intends to offer a similar experience to its big brothers for an even softer price (459 €).
The Android Central site reports that Rick Osterloh, vice president of devices and services at Google, has confirmed that a brand new sensor will be installed under the screen of this model. However, he did not give any additional information on the latter. It is therefore unclear whether or not this sensor will be based on another technology.
This change does not necessarily mean that performance will be better. The hardware is not everything, and Google also needs to polish the software part and the integration of the latter with the Pixel 6a. We can also hope that some of the work done on this version can benefit owners of Pixel 6 and 6 Pro. One thing is certain, this sensor will be particularly scrutinized when the smartphone is released, scheduled for the end of July.
