Jacques Weber: why he reviewed his judgment on Bernard Tapie

Sunday May 1, 2022, Jacques Weber was invited to the 8:30 p.m. set on Sunday, on France 2. Facing Laurent Delahousse, the actor revealed that he had reviewed his judgment on Bernard Tapie.

Thursday April 7, 2022, Arte launched the second season of the event series In therapy. In it, Jacques Weber plays Paul, a business manager who worries about his daughter. Guest on the 8:30 p.m. set on Sunday, the actor revealed about his character: « I wasn’t inspired by Bernard Tapie, I went back to him.« Having reviewed his judgment on the businessman who died on October 3, 2021, Jacques Weber said: »I said to myself: ‘After all, this Bernard Tapie, whom one could, by what he represented symbolically, not love him.’ It was my case I didn’t like what he represented. But I said to myself: ‘At the same time, no doubt, he too has weaknesses and flaws after all.’ What a man are you, a man like the others and you too. But at the same time, we are all exceptions.«

A month earlier, Jacques Weber had already mentioned Bernard Tapie during an interview with Télé 7 days. Assuring that he had first had doubts before playing Paul in In Therapy, he explained: « Embodying a boss, I who am very left, it was complicated. And, of course, like any self-respecting moron, I’ve often made generalizations about employers. I saw in Alain, my character, such explanations for his difficult relationship with the world, that all of a sudden, I discovered the human he was.Discussing what finally made him decide to accept the role, the actor added: « I thought of Bernard Tapie, who was a despicable individual, and whom I saw fight against his cancer, become again a man like the others. It silenced me.«

Jacques Weber: « We must stop stupidity »

A few years earlier, the actor had had harsh words for Bernard Tapie. Not appreciating that the latter does theatre, he had indeed declared: « If it’s to see mediocre and vulgar people, then I say no to theater on television. I can’t even stand the thought of him setting foot on a stage. We have to stop stupidity, it’s a difficult and demanding job.«
