On the occasion of the official opening of Parliament in London, it was Prince Charles who replaced Queen Elizabeth II. By delivering his speech in his place, he let himself be won over by emotion.
Queen Elizabeth II was unable to make the trip. Due to health concerns and « mobility issues », the 96-year-old was indeed forced to stay at home, missing the official opening of Parliament in London. For the first time in nearly 60 years, it is therefore not she who inaugurated it but her son, Prince Charles.
As reported Royal Stories, the latter delivered the traditional speech from the throne on Tuesday May 10, 2022 with great emotion. After referring to « Her Majesty’s Government« , Prince Charles kept throwing a few glances at his mother’s crown. Transported earlier by limo with the jeweler, the crown acted as a presence on behalf of Queen Elizabeth II but also represented power and authority for the British.
Absence of the queen: did she follow the event?
Not having been able to attend the ceremony, Queen Elizabeth II was however able to follow it live from her television. An event all the more touching for her as her grandson, Prince William, was alongside Prince Charles to support him. Kate Middleton’s husband arrived about five minutes early. Camilla Parker Bowles was also there.
Note that Queen Elizabeth II missed this event twice, in 1959 and 1963. In those years, she was pregnant with Prince Andrew and Prince Edward respectively. By replacing her at short notice in 2022, Prince Charles notably said, through the Queen’s speech, that the government’s priority was « grow and strengthen the economy and help ease the cost of living for families. »
