How to enroll in health insurance after a qualifying life event.
If you experience a qualifying life event, you may be eligible for a special enrollment period to enroll in or change your health insurance coverage outside of the regular open enrollment period. To do so, you will need to provide proof of your qualifying life event, such as a marriage certificate or proof of job loss. You can then shop for and enroll in a new health insurance plan through the Health Insurance Marketplace or directly through a private insurance company. It’s important to act quickly, as you typically only have 60 days from the date of your qualifying life event to enroll in or change your coverage.
