Green tea/coffee
One of the most common symptoms of underactive thyroid is weight gain. Supplements that can help control weight and help lose weight are those that contain green tea and green coffee extract. There is evidence that green tea extract can help with weight loss (x), while green coffee extract is also promising as a weight loss aid (xi) because it contains a substance called chlorogenic acid (xii).
Glucomannan
Glucomannan is a form of water-soluble fiber produced from the root of the konjac plant and can also help in weight loss (xiii). We think it works by stretching in the stomach and helping you feel full. Very low-calorie foods based on glucomannan, including « lean noodles and pasta, are becoming increasingly popular.
Conjugated linoleic acid
It can be useful for those who have gained weight as a result of thyroid disease, as there is evidence that it can help reduce the level of body fat (xiv).
Fish oils
Depression is one of the symptoms of the underactive thyroid, but taking a fish oil-based dietary supplement is helpful. There is evidence that omega-3 fatty acids in fish oils may be more effective in treating depression than placebo (xv). You can also consider a 5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) supplement. This non-essential amino acid has proven to be as effective as some standard antidepressants
If you are vegetarian or vegan, you can still benefit from an omega-3 supplement thanks to the availability of products containing the natural form of omega-3 triglyceride (TG), which comes from plant organisms called microalgae instead of fish.
