« We must not be in the calculation »: the Girondins at the foot of the wall before facing Angers

The game of all fears. Sunday, the Girondins de Bordeaux will play a large part of their survival in Ligue 1 by moving on the lawn of SCO Angers. The Bordelais, 19th in the championship, have only three games left to try to avoid relegation to Ligue 2 which is getting closer from match to match.

In a remote confrontation with the Girondins, AS Saint-Etienne (18th) has part of their fate in its hands. Because, if the Greens were to win during their trip to Nice, and if the Girondins did not manage to win against Angers, then the descent of the Maritimes into the second division would be sealed. How, then, can the Girondins get out of a tricky end to the season in which they got themselves entangled?

Worst defense in Ligue 1 (by far)

If the style of play of David Guion’s men in the last match did not seem inclined towards the offensive, according to the ex-player, the Bordelais are nevertheless in 10th place in the ranking of the best attacks in Ligue 1, with 47 goals scored.

A more than respectable number which therefore does not explain their poor general record. For this, we must look more on the side of the defense of the former champion club of France. Specialist in the sector, Nordine Kourichi is not tender with the people of Bordeaux: « A few years ago, the Girondins de Bordeaux had a team that held the road, which was on track to be in the top five. There, when you look at the performance of each match of the Girondins, it seems that it It’s a team that plays at the bottom of the table in Ligue 2. And that saddens me…”.

With 85 goals conceded, Bordeaux is indeed the worst defense in the entire championship. The club is not even close to the total of Saint-Etienne, yet penultimate in the classification of the specialty with 70 goals taken.

The figures say a lot, as much as the quality of the game developed by the Girondins on the pitch. As their coach David Guion reminds us, it is not enough to be on the pace at times, but during an entire match to save yourself.

« To win matches, you will have to be able to show character. We have already done that, everything has to be well tuned, the puzzle is complete, so that we can have results »notes the technician, adding: « At Angers, there is no choice but to go for points, so I hope they will regain confidence and I hope this goal will make them much more efficient. »

Because on paper, Bordeaux has not won for four games and a victory against Metz, 20th and last in Ligue 1. Above all, David Guion’s team remains on a card from Nantes (5-3) and a defeat against Nice (0-1).

« There is no reduction but we are very disappointed, conceded the coach. There are three days left, we intend to exist, skip this last place and seek maintenance. » This will require winning at least once against Angers, Lorient or Brest.
